An Open Letter to Municipal Administrators
November 1st, 2007:  A suggestion by the Chairman of the Saskatchewan Municpal Board that the Resort Village could abate assessments demanded in March by the Asssessment Appeals Committee effectively nulifies the March 2007 landmark ruling in favor of taxpayers.

Residents Win Appeal of Village Tax Exemptions
March 16th, 2007:  Two residents who appealed the Board of Revision decision to the Assessment Appeals Committee of the Saskatchewan Municipal Board have won a decision contesting controversial tax exemptions granted by the Village in 2005 to the Industrial and Commercial subdivisions. Many of these properties were held by speculators, including a former member of Council and the Building Inspector.

Ratepayers Question Use of Septic Mounds for Proposed Subdiv
March 1st, 2007:  Ratepayers Co-op president Bernie MacNeill has sent a letter to Community Planning expressing concern over an application for development of a new subdivision near the perimeter of the Village by the RM of Paddockwood. Developers are proposing to use septic field/mound systems for waste, even though it is believed that this area is part of the Candle Lake drainage basin. The proposal has other significant potential impacts on Village services.

Village Cabin Demolition Order Quashed by Court
February 1st, 2007:  Court of Queen's Bench has quashed a 2005 Demolition Order issued by council for the H. Smith property , finding the the Village provided inadequate notice and non-compliance with several sections of the Urban Municipality Act.

Clinton Mauthe Resigns as Resort Village Administrator
August 9th, 2006:  Resort Village Administrator Clinton Mauthe tendered his resignation in the closing minutes of the August 8th Council meeting as the new Council were sworn in. Mauthe indicated that he was pursuing other opportunities, and it has since become known that he has accepted the position of Administrator in Iqaluit, Nunavut (see Iqaluit Selects New CAO.)
2006 Resort Village Election Results In!
July 23rd, 2006:  The 2006 Municipal Elections resulted in a record turnout of 1240 ratepayers as incumbent mayor Borden Wasyluk was ousted by councillor Nick Toporowski by a margin of almost 800 votes. The remaining new councillors are:

  • Gene Nikiforuk
  • Lloyd Caithcart
  • Len Romaniuk
  • Doug Allen

The new council will be sworn in August 8th.

June 15th, 2006:  Vol.2 Issue 3 of the Village Newsletter includes updates on purchase and sale of Commercial and R2 lots; purchase of equipment; street drainage and truck route; school & property taxes; and development and community cleanup programs. PLUS: the 2005 financial statement.

Lake Conducting Planning Survey!
May 30th, 2006:  In January, Council contracted Denton Yeo, a planning consultant, to review recent developments and assist Council and Administration with future development related decisions. While this wasn't widely publicized, the village's website has a page with additional information (goto http://www.candlelakeresort.ca/report/devreport.htm) and provides a link for residents to complete a questionnaire. Please make your views known!

Council Passes Controversial Bylaws
January 9th, 2006:  The resort village Council passed a series of bylaws Jan. 9th limiting the public notice provided for proposed bylaws, giving the administrator unconstrained spending powers and providing for arbitrary fines and liens on property with a 3 day response period for 'nuisance' violations.
